Skoda has officially named its new sub-4 metre SUV, the Kylaq, signaling the brand's entry into one of the automotive market's most hotly contested segments. A recently leaked spy video has shed light on some of the key features of this upcoming model, which shares its MQB-A0-IN platform with the Kushaq and Slavia. Designed to take on well-established rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Kia Sonet, and Hyundai Venue, the Kylaq aims to carve out its own niche in the compact SUV space. Skoda is placing a strong emphasis on safety with the Kylaq, and the SUV is expected to perform well in Global NCAP crash tests, potentially earning high ratings. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) could also be on the cards, a significant addition in this segment that would align with the rising consumer demand for enhanced safety features. The global unveiling of the Kylaq is anticipated at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025. Production might kick off towards the end of this year, and the SUV could start arriving in showrooms by February 2025.

New Features and Design Elements of the Skoda Kylaq

The spy video reveals that the Kylaq will boast a modern design, highlighted by a single-panel sunroof and sporty alloy wheels, features likely limited to its top-tier variants. Additional details include roof rails and a shark fin antenna, adding to its urban appeal. Despite the camouflage, distinctive character lines on the rear and a practical tailgate design are evident, with L-shaped LED tail lamps providing a modern touch. However, unlike some competitors like the Hyundai Venue, the Kylaq appears to skip the connected light bar between the tail lamps. Confirmed color options include vibrant red and orange shades, adding a splash of personality to its looks.

Skoda has also confirmed a split headlight arrangement, featuring LED daytime running lights, and a front grille design that closely resembles the Kushaq but with refined styling to distinguish the Kylaq. Inside, Skoda is expected to offer a tech-laden cabin, possibly with a large touchscreen infotainment system, connected car features, and a premium audio setup, following current market trends.

Powertrain Details

Under the hood, the Kylaq will feature a familiar yet capable setup. It will be powered by a 1-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. This engine will be mated to a choice of transmissions: a 6-speed manual for driving enthusiasts and a 6-speed automatic torque converter for those preferring ease of use in urban settings. This engine setup, proven in other models like the Kushaq, is known for balancing performance with fuel efficiency, making it suitable for both city commutes and highway cruising.
